Another name for James was James DAWE.
General Notes:
Birth 1855 Jun James Daw Holsworthy 5b 497 (mother's name Davey on GRO index) is correct. Certificate gives date as 9 March 1855 (not 8th as in family bible). Parents as John Daw and Betsy Daw, formerly Davey - address is North Tamerton and informant was father.
Marriage Sep 1874 Launceston (5c 42) James Dawe and Mary Stevens - see marriage notes for confirmation that this is correct.
Incorrect search: Death registered Mar 1918 James Dawe Launceston 5c p29 aged 66 (not 64!). Died on 6 Feb 1918 at Hendra Villas, Launceston. Informant was son, William Dawe of 25 Rosebery Road, Muswell Hill, London. Gave occupation as Cattle Dealer and Farmer - our previous information was "bootmaker". This is not the correct James - but the James born in 1851 to James and Elizabeth (farmers) and living at Hendra Villa, Launceston age 48 with wife Ann in 1901.
Mary Dawe was described as "widow of James Dawe, Farmer", when she died. Did this mean that James was a farmer, or that Mary became a farmer?
All children who married after 1910 were married in Plymouth.
There were two possible deaths in Mar 1918 recorded, one was a bit too old. However it turned out to be the correct James. James Dawe - Plymouth 5b 363 aged 71. - Yes. date 20 Mar 1918, registered by son F Daw and occ=Bootmaker. Plymouth reg office have name as DAW, not DAWE. John J Dawe - Plymouth 5b 325 aged 62. Wrong
After contacting the Plymouth Register Office, it transpired that the death of John James Dawe was registered by his wife A. Dawe and so this is definitely not the correct James, despite the age being about right. Also the death was in January.
However, the other entry (James aged 71) matches very closely other than the age - occupation, date and informant all fit. Interestingly the entry at Plymouth was spelled DAW, not DAWE as per the GRO index. 20 March 1918 at the Workhouse Infirmary UD James DAW, Male, 71 years, of 28 Tavistock Road Plymouth UD a Bootmaker. The informant was F Daw son in attendance 85 Cobourg Street Plymouth. The death was registered on 23 March 1918.
There is no record of probate in 1918 or 1919 The only entry was for 1918 - the James Dawe from Hendra Villas (see above)
Most information was originally from RD Howell written sheets and family bible (Jill has). This included date of marriage as 10 Aug 1875. Suspect that the bible was given to them on the Christening of first child and they wrote the current year and not the year of marriage. Bible also gives his date of death as 20 Mar 1918 and burial on 24 Mar 1918. This appears to have now been confirmed with the finding of his death in Plymouth.

Address at time of mother's death was Cross Park Cottages, North Tamerton
From a source " I have three other unconfirmed siblings for James, all born in Tamerton at the right time: Eliza, (b 1846, d 1848), Frederic James b 1848, and Susanna Grace (1852-9). For James's children I have a possible extra - Clara Bessie, born and died 1870 - and a definite, Ernest born 1894. I have a wife for Christopher Davey - Cattern, b 1758 - and children John, Richard, Eliza, Christopher, James Edward, Samuel and Ann. " - Only Ernest, of the possible children, is correct. The 1911 census says that Mary had a total of 9 children and 8 were still alive. Clara Bessie appears to be illegitimate. - Siblings Eliza (1846) and Susanna Grace (1852) have mother's name DAVEY on GRO index and certificates prove they are correct
Noted events in his life were:
• Occupation. Bootmaker
• Occupation: Bootmaker, 26 Jun 1902, Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England.
James married Mary STEVENS, daughter of Digory STEVENS and Ann HARRIS, on 29 Aug 1874 in Launceston, Cornwall, England. (Mary STEVENS was born on 3 Dec 1853 in Tetcott, Devon, England, died on 8 Feb 1944 in Egloskerry, Cornwall, England and was buried on 12 Feb 1944.)
Marriage Notes:
Family bible states date of marriage as 10 Aug 1875. FreeBMD gives a likely match for Sep qtr 1874. The Marriage certificate gives the date of marriage as 29 August 1874 in Launceston Register Office when James was 19 and Mary was 21. Hence the information in the bible was quite incorrect (possibly because the bible was provided for the christening of first child and the current year was inserted). Witnesses were Thomas Stevens and Elizabeth Gilbert. Parents given as John Dawe and Digory Stevens - confirming the correct couple. Thomas Stevens was Mary's twin brother
